It's the Sign of the Fish: What in the World does a Pisces Read? (It May Not Be What You Think)

I was born in a February blizzard known to blanket the eastern Montana plains throughout the 70’s. 

Twenty-eight years and nine days later, my oldest son was born half-past midnight on a frigid night in Butte, Montana. In the early morning hours on the 28th that year, it was around -40 degrees. 

Both born in February. Both born in the cold. Both bonafide Pisces.

The twelfth sign of the zodiac, individuals under the Pisces sign - born between February 18 and March 20 – is represented by two fish. A water sign, Pisces are considered creative, intuitive, and emotional. Pisces often feel things deeply – perhaps psychically – and are known to have strong gut instincts. 

My birthday is Monday, and this week’s blog is meant to be fun and interesting. It is insightful only to the extent that I’m sharing what has been gleaned from websites and a novice interest in the traits, actions, and emotions that may be influenced by the zodiac. It is also influenced by my own reading habits and research on famous Piscean authors.  

According to information on the website Astrologify, Pisces are known to be compassionate and intuitive, empathetic and open-minded. They are gentle and creative. Pisces is spiritually aligned and can be deeply attuned to others’ feelings and emotions.


Imaginative and intuitive. It’s no wonder Pisces respond to a wide variety of books and genres. Here are some characteristics and traits of Pisces that influence our reading habits, and some brilliant Piscean authors to check out. 

Intuition

A highly intuitive and empathetic sign, we pick up on subtle energies and emotions, which can enhance our understanding and interpretation of books. We tend to rely on gut feelings and instinct when selecting books to read, allowing us to connect with themes and messages on a deeper level.

Emotional Depth

As a water sign, we tend to have deep emotional experiences. When reading, we may seek  books that evoke strong emotions or explore complex emotional landscapes. We are drawn to stories that capture the human condition, struggles, and triumphs; these books resonate with our own empathetic nature. 

Jack Kerouac is a famous Piscean and author of On the Road which has been described as “highly imaginative.” He says this in his novel: 

"The only people for me are the mad ones, the ones who are mad to live, mad to talk, mad to be saved, desirous of everything at the same time, the ones who never yawn or say a commonplace thing, but burn, burn, burn, like fabulous yellow roman candles exploding like spiders across the stars ..."

Escapism

Pisces often have vivid imaginations and a desire to escape from the mundane aspects of life. Reading provides us with an opportunity to immerse ourselves in fictional worlds and explore new perspectives. Pisces may enjoy genres such as fantasy, science fiction, or magical realism that transport us to other realities and ignite our imagination. 

While those genres are not necessarily my personal favorite, I recently read Impossible Creatures by Katherine Rundell, and it’s a fantastic 5-star modern children's fantasy full of epic adventure, lovable characters, and unforgettable landscapes in other worlds.

Symbolism and Spirituality

Pisces is a sign associated with spirituality and the subconscious mind. We may be drawn to books that delve into symbolism, dream analysis, and mystical themes. We have a natural inclination to explore the deeper meaning and hidden symbolism within stories, and we tend   to be receptive to allegorical and metaphorical narratives. 

Gabriel Garcia Marquez, born on March 6, won the Nobel Prize in 1982 for 100 Years of Solitude, “in which the fantastic and realistic are combined in a richly composed world of imagination …”, as described by the Nobel Foundation. 

Sounds like a Pisces.


Versatility

Pisces often have diverse interests and can adapt to different genres and styles of writing. We enjoy exploring a wide range of topics and authors, allowing the texts to broaden our perspectives and gain new insights. We appreciate both fiction and nonfiction, and we love it more when the material resonates with our emotional and intuitive sensibilities.

Principal Literacy Series. Marshmallow and Me: A Principal and Her Reading Buddy’s Literacy-Leading Journey

  I brought them to life.  I massaged the heart.
